Annually, True to Africa visits Uganda to connect with our local strategic partners at Child2Youth Foundation, make home visits to the families of sponsored students and immerse ourselves in the communities and culture we serve. These home visits to sponsored students’ families are central to these trips, with a focus on the more vulnerable families in rural villages. 

Home visits allow us to provide needed humanitarian care items, better understand the realities behind student profiles, connect with students and caregivers in their environments, and ensure the sponsorship program effectively addresses their needs. Visiting homes builds trust, facilitates sharing updates with sponsors, and acknowledges the resilience of these communities, fostering connections that impact lives. These home visits are central to our mission, highlighting the human stories driving our work.

Focus on Vulnerable Families

We prioritize visiting students and families in rural villages who face vulnerabilities such as illness, low income, and large households. Providing humanitarian care to these homes that have very limited resources, our support can have the most immediate impact.  While we cannot visit every student each trip due to time constraints, we carefully identify families to visit, and the families’ gratitude reinforces our commitment.

In close consultation with C2Y social workers, we identify families and their urgent needs. We schedule visits when caregivers are available and can bring the child home from school if needed. Accompanied by a C2Y social worker, we meet caregivers and family members as allies, ready to listen and understand.

C2Y social workers are crucial to our efforts. Familiar with the students, families, and homes, they speak with guardians (often in Luganda) to understand the student’s well-being, family situation, home conditions, and income activities, as well as assess current needs. Their translation helps us understand their welfare, conditions, and needs and enables us to communicate with parents, guardians, and family members.

Guided by local social workers, we provide essential items like food (posho/corn grits, dry beans, and cooking oil), bedding, mosquito nets, and other necessities. Previous visits have allowed us to identify and address medical needs, meet extended family members, build relationships, and assess home conditions and additional needs. 

Capturing Moments for Sponsors

Home visits also bridge the gap between sponsors and students. They provide opportunities to capture photos and videos of students with their caregivers in their home environment, offering glimpses into their daily lives to share with sponsors.

These updates provide sponsors with a personal view into the life of a child they support, demonstrating the real impact of their generosity. Sharing photos, updates, and stories makes sponsorships more tangible and personal. Sponsors witness the impact of their support, and students feel cared for emotionally as well as financially.

The Strength of Ugandan Communities

Many sponsored students in Uganda live with extended family or community caregivers. A significant number are orphans, often due to HIV/AIDS, and are cared for by grandparents, aunts, uncles, or neighbors. 

This strong community spirit and shared responsibility is inspiring. Families often strive to care for many children despite limited resources, a burden that can be heavy in already struggling households.  

Each home visit reveals a unique story of resilience, with some families achieving stability against odds and others facing daily challenges with determination.

Building Lasting Relationships

These visits foster trust and build relationships. Over time, families recognize us and feel more connected to the sponsorship program, witnessing the tangible benefits their children receive and better understanding the value of education and their role in the larger education effort.

For the True to Africa team, these visits deepen our understanding of students and families. Every interaction reinforces our commitment, reminding us that our mission involves strengthening families, building lasting relationships, and enabling life-long education.

The students’ smiles, caregivers’ gratitude, and the resilience observed leave a lasting impression, highlighting the importance of community, compassion, and hope.
