Buyomba Community Primary School
Buyomba is a small village nestled on the shore of Lake Victoria. Driven by a deep desire to educate their children, the parents of the village constructed a tiny schoolhouse from sticks and mud, just yards from the lake. A local fisherman generously donated the land for this initial build, and over the past 14 years, his continued contributions have allowed Buyomba Community Primary School to expand significantly. The families here truly grasp the importance of education, especially since most adults are illiterate subsistence farmers. Their dedication to helping their children and grandchildren gain access to learning is the powerful force behind the inspiring story of this small village school!
Watch the videos above to witness Buyomba Community School’s beginnings in 2011, the year TrueToAfrica partnered with C2Y Foundation and the local village council to kickstart vital development projects, and also meet Sophia, a young girl who attends the school.

The original structures were built by the community in an effort to provide education for their children, the school at that time consisted of just one stick-and-mud classroom and one small stick-and-mud latrine.
